The AAP reports strong sales for December, showing growth for the full year. Trade sales, Adult + Children’s/YA, rose 4% from previous year.

Other categories of book sales in the same AAP report are Religious Presses $554 million (+ 1.3%); Professional Books $798 million (+ 10.1%); K-12 (school books): $3.191 billion (+10.7%); Higher Ed $4.405 billion (2.4%); University Press $117 million (+0.3%). Adult digital audio grew strongly, 27%, to $162 million.

The AAP figures are, as usual, subject to revision, usually downwards. As Publishers Lunch, the source of these numbers points out, last years trade revision was quite large (- $68 million) and this can make trend identification a hazardous undertaking. Notice that e-book sales grew by about 5% though.
