This is the Google Doodle for today, 5 May, celebrating journalist Nelly Bly’s 151st birthday. Click here and you’ll be able to hear the song by Karen O . She’s described by Mother Jones as “all-around feminist badass”. Her round-the-world trip, completed in 72 days in 1889-90, was designed to beat the time taken by Phileas Fogg and Passepartout, heroes of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days. (Mother Jones gets this the wrong way round.) Here’s Frank Leslie’s Illustrated News’ picture of her return to Hoboken.

Her Ten Days in a Mad-House may be read here at The University of Pennsylvania’s Celebration of Women Writers site.
