Can Shelf Awareness be right? The Queen on one side of the 50p coin and Peter Rabbit (in color!) on the other. No royalist I, but shouldn’t Her Majesty be squawking about getting colorized too? The Guardian has the story of this celebration of Beatrice Potter’s 150’s birthday (as no doubt does everyone else, but I can’t bring myself to look.) Always nice to get money on your birthday. Her’s isn’t till July 28th though.
Not satisfied with this debasement of our currency, the Royal Mint apparently plans to issue coins with three more Beatrice Potter characters on them later this year. No doubt she sold a lot of books — which did at the outset cost a good deal less than 50p. You’ll need a small bag of coins to get a single copy nowadays though.
