Oxford University Press may have unleashed chaos upon us by selecting this tears-of-joy emoji as word of the year. Here’s a link to a translation of Moby-Dick into emojis, under the title Emoji Dick. Tim Peters at LA Review of Books (link via LitHub Daily) reports also on an original new fiction in this “language” published in 2014 by MIT Press. The examples quoted are a bit lavatorial, though that could just be because to selection bias I guess, but it all seems a bit too much like hard work. Are frequent users of social media really fluent in emoji?
In principle though it’s really just like reading in a foreign language.
